Complete split to fold of dust jacket spine has been tacked together on reverse with archival tissue tape.
Wartime argument for compulsory national military service in Canada, published in 1917 at the height of the conscription crisis. Merritt was president of the Canadian Defence League and a prominent advocate for compulsory military service. He died of influenza in October 1918, weeks before the armistice, having lived to see both the conscription he championed and the bitter French-English divisions it provoked. The town of Merritt, British Columbia is named after him.
