Wartime argument for compulsory national military service in Canada, published in 1917 at the height of the conscription crisis. Merritt was president of the Canadian Defence League and a prominent advocate for compulsory military service. He died of influenza in October 1918, weeks before the armistice, having lived to see both the conscription he championed and the bitter French-English divisions it provoked. The town of Merritt, British Columbia is named after him.
